The BiBi project

The BiBi-project (the impact of bilingualism and bi-dialectalism on cognitive and linguistic development) is a collaboration between language researchers from the Université libre de Bruxelles and University of Cambridge. Together we aim to unravel the impact of speaking two languages or dialects on the cognitive and linguistic development in children. Is it true that linguistic development is (temporarily) delayed when you speak two languages? Do you become smarter when you speak multiple languages? Does this hold for speaking a dialect as well? To find answers to these questions and more, we will visit primary schools to test 11/12-year-old children with different language backgrounds. At the moment, we are mainly interested in speakers of Western Flemish/Dutch, and trilingual Arabic/French/Dutch speakers.
